Remarks ANL Indonesia collided with a Singapore naval ship, which
broke in two after the collision. 4 female crewmembers of the
RSS Courageous died. 2 officers of the naval ship were justiced for
improper navigation however the Singapore authorities claimed
against the Dutch shipowner full responsibility of the collision.
Meanwhile, the ANL Indonesia has been renamed into Maersk Darwin
and operating for Maersk Sealand.

and wooden protecting floors (pallets) and fire spread rapidly
through the whole accomodation including the bridge. A new
superstructure was ordered in Latvia as I know.
This is the first "12000 TEU" vessel.

Hull cracked and major damage. Vessel refloated by 13 tugs at
17:00 the same day and towed to the Dutch port of Flushing for
repair and discharging.
Photo's 12-17 were taken on the Waterway river near Maassluis when
the ship was underway to the dock. (07-oct-2005)

Location Indian Ocean, 150 km south of Sri Lanka underway to Europe
Remarks First explosion on deck 4, from unknown origin, possible undeclared dangerous cargo, possible Calcium hypochlorite,
4 days later a second explosion occured due to spread fires from the first explosion. This second explosion was on deck 6, with containers with magnesium ignots.A huge fire results in crew must abandon
the just 4 months old ship, on her second voyage to Europe.
The ship was towed to a port to discharge the containers and vessel
was sold to Indian breakers since the rebuilding costs would be
more expensive then demolish the ship. Zodiac Maritime (UK) bought
the ship, refurbished the ship for nearly 50% of the price of a new ship and she is now sailing around as the "Norasia Bellatrix".

Remarks Explosion (source unknown) caused fire and all bays behind the
superstructure and the superstructure has been completely destroyed
by the fire. Vessel declared total loss and being towed to Doha,
Qatar or Dubai, UAE by the Dutch tug "Smitwijs Rotterdam".
Distress signal+smoke discovered by Dutch fregat "De zeven
provinciën" being on patrol for mission "Endurance freedom"

Ital Florida

Remarks At night time the vessel hit a Indonesian island with 21 knots.
Major damage to her bow occured, vessel refloated on 28-nov-1989
09:30 and towed with 3,5 knots towards Singapore with 2
salvage tugs. Vessel dry docked in Singapore for repairs.
 
 
 

Kyoto Express / Southampton Container Terminal

Remarks During booming the gantry crane's arm, the arm was broken and smashed
onto the Kyoto Express which was ready for departure. After the
accident the authorities ordered to shutdown all 11 gantry cranes
for further safety inspections. A giant chaos was the result and several
containerships diverted to surrounding ports for discharging.
 
 

Limburg

A huge fire was the result. However this is not a containership I would

Remarks A container with IMO 5.2/UN 3105 (Organic perioxde) caught fire
when the ship was awaiting her berth in Yantian. Crew immediately
took action to stop the fire and was assisted by fire boats.
No injuries occured. Incorrect information from the shipper seems
to be the reason, no dangerous cargo remarks were provided to
the shipping liner.

Remarks Vessel broke in 2 parts during heavy water. Forepeak sank, aft
peak floated and was towed to the Canary islands thereafter.
Just after the accident sources said the Italian officers steered the
vessel with full speed into the high waves, but in 2005 research
concluded the welding points of the ship (when it was jumbosized)
were weak and are the reason of this accident.
 

MSC Ilona + Hyundai Advance

Remarks Hyundai Advance collided to MSC Ilona and approx. 138.000 gallons
of oil were spilled. The Hyundai ship tried to 'escape' of the accident
area, but were stopped by Chinese patrol boats. The oil spill was
approx. 22x16 km big. The Hyundai Advance was underway from
Shenzhen to Singapore, whilst the MSC Ilona arrived from Shanghai
and was heading for Shenzhen.
 

MSC Napoli

Remarks Grounded / crack in the hull
During a very heavy storm MSC Napoli's engine room was taking
water by a hold in the hull (reason unknown or aground)
English & French coastguard tried to pull the vessel to a port, however during
this action the vessel almost capesized and was pushed aground.
Many containers lost overboard and beached. Oil pollution. During May 2007 the last of 2199 containers onboard were discharged by Smit Salvage team. During refloating trials in June/July 2007, the ships' damage is severe than expected, therefore the salvage teams used explosives to break th ship in 2 before removal. In August 2007 the MSC Napoli was towed to Belfast, N-Ireland, to be demolished at the same wharf as the famous "Titanic" was built. The total salvage operation costs around 70 million Euro's. (Approx. USD 92 mln)
This vessel also grounded in 2001 on a coral reef near Singapore, at full speed and fully loaded (as CMA CGM Normandie).

NYK Antares

Rotterdam was the only port who could clean up

Remarks The vessel was hit by heavy weather on the Pacific Ocean, on the
photo's 1-4 you see the result on arrival in Taiwan. The last photo

This accident was the 2nd place-worst container accident ever.

Remarks Two vessels collided at night time, probably due to steering gear failure of the Pelican I. Pelican I engine room flooded
and vessel was grounded by the pilot/captain to avoid sinking.
No injuries occured.
Pelican I was later repaired in Vlissingen (Flushing), Netherlands and
it was sad one crane driver was killed during unloading containers from the ship.

In August 2007 salvage works began to upright the vessel.
On 31-aug-2007 the salvage team has succeeded to upright to the
vessel. On 18-nov-2007 the vessel has been towed to the Antwerp Shiprepair
yard for repairs.

Remarks During the night the tanker Hellenic Star came out of the Botlek
area and turned onto the river. The vessel became steerless and
hit the passing Western Trader. The Western Trader flooded was
pushed towards undeep water and grounded to avoid sinking.
Containers were unloaded by a floating crane and pontoon.
